The opening ceremony of the Cannes film festival (May 16- May 27) is drawing near and all the makeup artists and hairstylists are getting ready for what truly qualifies as a marathon.

Paris-based international hair care brand Dessange is a longtime Cannes partner and, for Relaxnews, its new creative director Eduardo Sanchez reveals the secret tips he will use on the stars appearing on the red carpet and deciphers the trends for this edition.

ON THE RED CARPET AT CANNES 2012

Can you tell us about the hair trends for this year's event?

The three main 2012 trends will be the Marilyn style, the asymmetric braid and the wet chignon. This year, the festival organizers have decided to honor Marilyn -- and so have we, creating volume and movement through messy or well-defined curls and finger waves. The asymmetric braid will also be in style, offering a very feminine and ultra-glamorous look. A style that will be ubiquitous this summer, the wet chignon, was on every runway during the last fashion weeks.

What are the secret weapons you pull out for special events such as the Cannes festival?

We do have a few secrets up our sleeves. One day, a star specifically asked for matte hair. Without any product at hand, I simply used soap which 'dulls' the hair to add a matte effect. It is also possible to use a piece of leftover fabric from the star's outfit to create a really unique hairstyle.

What are the secrets of a hairstyle that works?

The essential element is what we call the ‘assessment': to understand what the person is looking for and be able to adapt to the outfits and jewelry, communicating with the star is key. If she is wearing a simple dress, the hairdresser can go for an elaborate style. If the dress itself is elaborate, we have to balance the look with a simpler hairstyle.

How do you make sure the style looks good even in bad weather and avoid issues like frizzy hair?

To avoid this problem, you have to use styling and finishing products -- especially if the hair is thin and has a tendency to frizz easily. In that case, a tight defined hairstyle will do the trick: the hair will not get messy and won't frizz.

What's the secret to maintaining a perfect chignon throughout a whole day ?

To make a chignon last, your hair base must be well prepared with a full blow dry. And finished with a great deal of fixing spray.

How much time do you usually spend doing a celebrity's hair for the festival? Have you ever styled someone in record time?

The average amount of time I spend on one hairstyle is 30 minutes -- but sometimes I've had to get a star's hair ready in five minutes. It becomes a race against the clock.

Do you often use hair accessories?

It's our job to adapt to what the celebrity has decided to wear. If they're going to have a lot of jewelry, you have to keep things simple in the hair area. No one wants to look like a Christmas tree. We use hair adornments when the only jewelry the star is wearing is a pair of earrings, for example.

What is the most extravagant celebrity demand you've ever had?

Often, what we are asked is not that extravagant. The hardest thing to manage is time, especially when you have to work in five minutes. I remember I once had to take care of someone's hair while they were already in the hotel lobby on their way to the red carpet.

Do you have a particularly fond memory?

As you now know, celebrities are always in a rush when they meet me. I have been touched by those who still took the time to talk and get to know me or offered to have dinner together. Moments like those are special; we share secrets and sometimes even become friends.

At a major event such as Cannes, how many styling products do you use over the course of the day ?

Here are just a few figures: 210 styling products, including 90 spray bottles. And also 100 mousse bottles, 300 meters of hair extension and 20,000 pins.
