Happy Earth Day.
And though itâs only recognized in April, there are models and designers that are doing their part to improve the planet all year long -- proving that eco fashion isnât just a passing fad.
Stella McCartney is known for her true commitment to ethical fashion. She refrains from using any leather or fur in her designs. In her UK stores and warehouses, she uses Ecotricity, a company that invests in clean forms of power. And her companyâs 100 percent biodegradable bags are made of corn.
Samantha Pleet, a New York designer, uses organic and sustainable fabrics for her collections whenever possible. She also produces her line locally in a factory operated by wind power. Her chic designs can be found in Urban Outfitters and boutiques around the world.
Melissa Shoes have been making an eco-fashion statement for almost thirty years. The brand uses sustainable mono materials that can be easily recycled. Not only are they plastic, they are fashionable too. The leading designers are Jason Wu, Vivienne Westwood, and John Paul Gaultier.
Lara Miller a Chicago-based designer, is passionate about preserving the earth and supporting the local economy. Her line, in stores worldwide, uses certified organic cotton, hemp, vegan ahimsa peace silk, organic wool, linen, lyocell, flax and soy fibers, hand-loomed bamboo, and recycled organic cotton. Lara works with several organizations, including the Lexus Hybrid Living Program, showcasing her line while promoting environmental awareness.
Matt & Nat stylish handbags and accessories are made with 100 percent recycled plastic water bottles and cork. In 2010, they teamed up with Apple to create an exclusive collection of socially responsible laptop bags.
Gisele Bundchen has proven she is more than just a pretty face. This supermodel founded The Clean Water Project, which focuses on the preservation of water quality. She also created her own eco-friendly skincare line, Sejaa, and it is free of chemicals and synthetic preservatives. Sejaa containers are made with recyclable plastics and manufacturing is done with renewable electricity. She also recently built a green home.
See Gisele in her role as as a UN Environmental Ambassador.
